The Victorian Youth Boys Sevens team just fell short of claiming a historic championship on the weekend at the 2017 National Youth 7s Championships at Ballymore in Brisbane.
The boys kicked off day one of the championships with a tough matchup against QLD White. The team put in a solid performance, leading for the majority of the game and having to work hard to hold onto their converted try lead, securing the win in the dying minutes of the game.
Their second game saw them come up against South Australia, with the side putting in a more convincing performance and claiming the W in a 26-7 victory.
The third fixture for the boys was always going to be a tough one against championship favorites NSW Blue. This favoritism was well placed, with the NSW side running away with the game early on and never looking back, defeating the VIC boys 50-0.
After this defeat the Victorian’s looked to bounce back in their final match of the day against the National Indigenous side, doing just that with a four tries to two victory.
With that final win at the end of day one, the Victorian’s put themselves through to the Semi Final of the Cup against NSW White on day two. Against a side heavily favored to beat us, our team got off to a great start to cross for three consecutive first half tries, before hanging on to record a famous victory and secure a well-earned place in the Final.
The Final of the Championship was contested against the highly touted NSW Blue side. We put in a performance to be proud of, going down to the eventual champions 24-7.
This performance at the 2017 Championships is on par with the best outcome for any Youth Victorian 7’s side. An outstanding result. Well done team!!
